The Basics: How Domain Connections Work
Your .nyc domain needs to point to the servers where your website files live via DNS settings. There are two common methods: DNS pointing (update records at your registrar to point to your platform) or domain transfer (move the domain to your platform). DNS pointing is simpler for most NYC business owners — about 10 minutes of setup.
Connecting to Shopify
Shopify fully supports .nyc domains. In your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Domains > “Connect existing domain.” Set an A record to Shopify’s IP (23.227.38.65) and a CNAME for “www” pointing to shops.myshopify.com at your registrar. Shopify handles SSL automatically. Set your .nyc domain as the primary domain.
Connecting to Squarespace
In Squarespace, go to Settings > Domains > “Use a domain I own.” Set four A records to Squarespace’s IPs and a CNAME for “www” pointing to ext-cust.squarespace.com. SSL is provisioned automatically once verified.
Connecting to WordPress
WordPress.com: Add your .nyc domain under Upgrades > Domains (Personal plan or higher). Self-hosted WordPress: Point your domain’s nameservers or A records to your hosting provider, then update the WordPress site URL in Settings > General. Our own site at primedomains.nyc runs on self-hosted WordPress.
Other Platforms
Wix, GoDaddy Website Builder, Weebly, Carrd, and Webflow all support .nyc domains through DNS settings. If a platform supports custom domains, it supports .nyc.
Common Issues
DNS propagation can take up to 48 hours. SSL certificates usually auto-provision within 24 hours. Email setup requires a separate service like Google Workspace or Microsoft 365.
